Q: Discuss about the types of soil erosion.
Answer :- Based on the method of classification, there are roughly four types of soil erosion - Erosion due to water flow, Erosion due to wind, Erosion due to ocean waves, Glacial Erosion.
(A) Erosion due to water flow :-
Soil erosion is mostly caused by running water. There are 6 methods, they are ----
(1) Ravine Erosion :-
Ravine erosion occurs when soil gradually deepens in steep, unvegetated terrain.
(2) Splash Erosion :-
The erosion caused by direct impact of raindrops on loose soil is called muddy erosion.
(3) Sheet Erosion :-
The erosion caused by the erosion of the upper layer of soil in the form of a sheet by the flow of rain water is called sheet erosion.
(4) Slip Erosion :-
On mountain slopes, rainwater enters the soil and the entrance becomes soft and loose. At some point the layer suddenly drops downwards under water pressure and gravity. This is called slip erosion.
(5) Gully Erosion :-
Erosion which gradually widens and deepens the groove is called gully erosion.
(6) Rill Erosion :-
In arid regions, sudden heavy rains cause narrow channels or channels to erode, which is called rill erosion.
(B) Erosion due to wind :-
Loose soil, sand, dust particles are blown away by strong winds in open deserts of arid and dry deserts and semi-deserts. The terrain is getting lower and lower. This is called airflow loss.
(C) Erosion due to ocean waves :-
The sea bed is eroded away by tidal currents and wave action on the sea shelf. Again the saline water mixes with the normal soil along the shore and turns it into saline soil. This is called ocean wave erosion.
(D) Glacial Erosion :-
Mountain glacier ice dislodges the rock and carries it as ridges. This is called glacial erosion.
